History

Over 150 years ago, New York settlers, Joseph and Samuel McCarty, were on a journey to the west looking for a good location to build a mill. They eventually discovered a great spot along the banks of the Fox River, which is now the site of downtown Aurora, in 1834. The McCarty brothers thought that the place was ideal to grow a community and slowly made its way to become a city. Aurora was the first city in Illinois to install electric streetlights in 1881. Since then, it has been known as the "City of Lights" because of this. The economy progressed through manufacturing industrial and electrical equipment, heavy machinery, masonry accessories, rod end and spherical bearings, woven cotton fabrics, furniture and timing products. Industries like insurance and casino gambling also played a major role in the economy’s growth.
